Dneg’s New Dedicated Animated Film Division

In April 2014 the UK’s first dedicated high-end CG feature animation studio, Locksmith Animation, was launched backed by Elizabeth Murdoch and Double Negative.

Head of Locksmith, Sarah Smith (ex-Creative Director of Aardman Features):

“With animated films among the most beloved and successful movies in the world but still only a handful of producers out there, the U.K. offers Locksmith a unique opportunity, including a world-class CG visual FX industry, brilliant comedy writers and directors, outstanding children’s literature, the European animation talent pool, and government tax credits. We’re very excited that having attracted a visionary investor with global business skills in the shape of Liz Murdoch, and a globally acclaimed production partner in Double Negative, we have everything to make the most ambitious version of our vision achievable.”

In tandem with this announcement Dneg’s Feature Animation Division was launched led by ex-Dreamworks Associate Producer, Tom Jacomb.

Our new division’s intent is to create an integrated front end / back end pipeline to work in tandem with IP creators and filmmakers in the creation of high end animated features. Here at Double Negative, we have the infrastructure, pipeline and talent to provide unparalleled support for our new division and are currently working to augment our core team of animators and artists with additional artists specifically focussed on Animated features (based out of our London HQ).

Tom Jacomb (pictured left), Managing Director of Feature Animation has over 12 years experience as Tom Jacomb, Managing Director Feature AnimationAssociate Producer/Line Producer on full CG Animated Feature Films, having previously built 2 feature animation studios in London and Vancouver CA.

Tom joined Double Negative, most recently, from Dreamworks where he was Associate Producer on Oscar nominated Puss in Boots (grossing over $580m in the worldwide box office and spawning a brand new franchise with a sequel already in the works) and the critically acclaimed Rise of the Guardians (grossing over $300m).

Said Matt Holben, Dneg co-founder and CEO:

‘Animated Feature Films are an exciting next step in the development of Double Negative. We recognise that whilst there are synergies with VFX it requires a different approach. We are thrilled that Tom Jacomb has joined us to develop our new division. We are excited by the long-term potential of feature animation and are determined to build a sustainable pipeline of work.’

Said Tom Jacomb our new Managing Director of Animated Features:

‘I am incredibly excited to be back in London, with all the incredible animation talent here, tasked with building a top quality feature studio with Double Negative. By combining those talents with the vision, passion and artistry shown by Double Negative, we have an opportunity, with Feature Animation, to create a sustainable first class studio’
